4/28 Update

Carissa has tossed the snuffaluffagus look for something more understated. They removed the cpap and replaced it with a nasal cannula with just a little oxygen to help her right now. They almost just went without that but her oxygen saturation levels without any assistance were a little lower than they were comfortable with. They kept her feeding level the same right now to give her time to adjust to breathing on her own but may be able to increase it tomorrow. You probably remember that Carissa is still being fed with a tube that leads to her stomach. She needs to mature a little before she can handle breathing, sucking, and swallowing all at the same time. I'm not really sure I could do that right now. I guess girls really do develop sooner than boys.

It was great to be able to see more of Carissa's face again without the cpap and we are looking forward to even the nasal cannula being removed where we will be able to see her face clearly for the first time since right after she was born. I cannot stress enough how appreciative we are for your prayers and for our Heavenly Father leading her so far from the dire predictions before her birth to where she is right now. Sometimes just some little things really point out how amazing Carissa's present condition is compared to where she was or where it was thought she would be. Yesterday Carissa had a new nurse and she asked about the area that is healing from where the fluid was removed from Carissa's right lung the morning after she was born. The nurse was not aware that procedure had been done because it has become a non-issue recently as her lungs have continued to improve. This is after her first nurse told me a few days after she was born that the Friday night Carissa came to NICU that she had out the chest tubes ready to be inserted because the consensus was that Carissa would need them. The chest tubes are inserted when the lungs have such fluid issues that they continue to accumulate fluid even after being drained of it. There have been and are so many linear relationships between what we are all praying for Carissa and results that follow that I think most would have to note the relationship between the two sets if there is any objectivity involved.

Pamela continues to heal up. She wasn't feeling quite as well today. She did note that instead of sitting around resting that her days have been spent going to and from the hospital as well as just walking around parking lots, hallways, and NICU. It kind of makes sense that she might be feeling a little sore and run down considering she is doing this just days past major surgery.

I was able to hold Carissa a couple of times today and Uncle Keith got to visit today. He verified that her abdomen looks way more normal, that's a medical term, since he had been out of the country for a few days and had not seen her since the night she was born. The bad thing is is that I am pretty sure he thinks he can bill us for an office visit since he followed up on her condition. One of the pictures attached shows the smaller abdomen although it is not really a good angle to show that. Uncle Keith was also kind enough to point out that I said in last night's update that I had a 10 day old doctor. Of course what I meant to say was that I had a 10 day old daughter...my doctor is at least twice that old.
Please take the time to once again thank God for how far He has brought Carissa and for another good day on a good path.
Please pray that her breathing will continue to strengthen.
Please pray that Carissa's platelets will normalize, either on their own or by some treatment plan that has yet to be suggested since the root cause of the platelet issue is unknown.
Please pray that even non-believers around Carissa or around those talking about her (including all of y'all) will start to note our stories of your prayers and will see the relationship between the prayers and her improvement and that God will be glorified as more people recognize His majesty.
Please pray for wisdom for Pamela as she mixes being there for her Carissa as well as for Colton and Luke with her resting and healing.
I never tire of having the privilege of thanking y'all for your prayers. Please do not tire of lifting Carissa up.

Yours and His
Terry
